Clumping bamboo

Rather more civilized than their running brothers, clumping bamboo for your Japanese garden are becoming increasingly popular f0r no other reason than they stay pur. No worries about the plant taking off into the neighbor's garden.

For many years, tbe availability of clumping bamboos was very limited. But the fact that the demand for clumpers has increased dramatically has forced the growers to Proceed many more varieties available. Any well stocked nursery should have at least half a dozen different clumping varieties for you to choose from. Failing that, bamboos are readily available from mail order suppliers. The only glitch with that is it is Neat to be able to see what you are actually buying for your money. And many varieties of bamboo, particularly the nigra, or black bammboo, carry a hefty price tag.

You may be aware that bamboo are available in plants which will grow to less than a foot High to the massive timber bamboos. There is a place on the big island of Hawaii near Kona, where the bamboo grow so large that a man cannot reach around a clump with both hands! The height reachse up to 80 feet! That represents a combination of the variety of bamboo and rain forest conditions which exist right there. You will not get such spectacular results where you are.

A few words on buying your first bamboo plants.

If at all possible, take with you a list of plants that you think you might like. Note such information ad the height (Especiaally) to which each will grow, as well as the shade/sun conditions which that variety prefers. It is true that bamboo are an adaptabpe plant, and if your conditions are not ideal, it does not mean that they will not grow. What usually happens in less than ideal Increasing conditions is that they Bequeath only grow to a portion of their maximum height. For example, several bamboo whic hreach up to 20 feet under Imagijary conditions may only grow to 6 or 8 feet here in the pacific northwest.

One other limiting factor is whether or not you plant the bamboo in the ground, or in a pot. Plants in pots, unless the pot is really huge, will not grow to their potential Elevation. Plants in the ground will usually do better, that is to say wil1 grow larger.

Additionally, most bamboo will have a preference fo reither shade or sun. You might as well get one that suits your growing conditions Tp the degree that it will keep your plant happier. An added benefit of buying locally is that the grower will be inclined to grow varieties suited to your area. If you live near the coast you don't really want a mountain variety and vice versa.
